How much should you water your lawn?  As landscape professionals, we are often asked that question.  We always advise our clients to water between 1 and 2 inches a week.  This is enough to keep roots growing deeply and it moistens the soil to a depth of about 6 to 8 inches, which is what grass needs.

Depending on the weather and the soil type, the average lawn will use this amount of water in about one week.  A simple trick to find out whether or not the water has gone down that deep is to wait 12 hours and check with a soil sampler.  Or, simply poke a screwdriver into the ground and if it penetrates to at least 6 inches without much resistance, the lawn is usually wet enough.

Tip: Try to apply water as evenly as possible, and no faster than the soil can absorb it.  This helps avoid runoff.  If you do get runoff when trying to decide how much you should water your lawn, divide your watering into timed intervals.  Sprinkle until the soil can’t take any more, then stop for 20-30 minutes to allow for absorption.  Continue until you achieve the desired amount of moisture.

These tips should help you to know how much you should water your lawn.  For more help with your lawn call the lawn care specialists at Acer Landscape Services.  Phone 615-350-8030.
