Retention Ponds

A retention pond, also called a “wet pond”, is a pond designed to store and treat stormwater runoff. Although retention ponds can be used for creating beautiful waterfront property features, these ponds surprisingly serve a much bigger purpose. Retention ponds are primarily used to control stormwater runoff, specifically the quantity and quality of the stormwater. In layman’s terms, retention ponds are a great way to control stormwater runoff to prevent flooding, environmental issues, and other property damage, such as erosion issues.

Stormwater runs over streets, driveways, and other non-porous surfaces picking up toxic pollutants consisting of bacteria, pesticides, phosphorus, oil and grease, metals, and other unwanted elements. These water contaminants could have long-lasting detrimental effects on the environment, wildlife, and even humans.

To reduce the risk of flooding and water quality issues, all new developments are required to capture and control rainwater runoff according to the EPA’s stormwater regulations.

When it comes to controlling stormwater runoff, retention ponds are a great solution and investment. Retention ponds control stormwater runoff as well as prevent flooding, property damage, and other environmental issues.

Benefits of Retention Ponds:

  • Controls the water quantity
  • Collects and improves the water quality
  • Naturally treats water without additional chemicals or equipment
  • Allows debris and sediment to sink to the bottom allowing the water additional filtration
  • Provide beautiful eye-catching landscape design and aesthetics
  • Increase property values
  • Create new habitats for fish, birds, and other wildlife
  • Supports emergent and submerged aquatic vegetation (plants that grow completely underwater)
  • Can be used for recreational purposes, such as a fishing oasis for residents
  • Various landscape design options, i.e., fountains, flowers, bushes, trees, aquatics, etc.
  • Can support water reuse if constructed properly
  • Great solution AND selling point for HOA’s and other residential communities
  • Low maintenance if properly managed

Overall, retention ponds have several benefits and are a great way to control stormwater runoff.
